Tips for Buying Airtime
Local Network Affiliate Broadcast or Local Cable – Finding a Channel that Will Find Your Audience

Broadcast Stations

1. High Reach Programming – Sponsoring local programming such as local news is very productive. However, it is also very costly. Cable stations generally do not generate this type of high quality local programming.

2. Demographically Time Segmented – An advertiser can easily target a specific demographic by selecting the time of day that the spots will run.

Local Cable

1. Very Demographically Targeted Channels – Like radio, cable television stations are very narrowly targeted and can help the advertiser "zero in" on their audience. CNN, ESPN, TNN, MTV, Discovery… all have very specific demographics. Though the audience is narrowly targeted, it is significantly smaller.

2. Cost Effective – In most markets, cable advertising is 50% to 75% less than broadcast advertising.

3. Geographically Targeted – In medium size to large cities, cable companies have several "loops" reaching different parts of the city. The advertiser can reach a selected part of the city.

4. Local Insertion in National Programming – ESPN, CNN, USA, Discovery, etc., are national networks that produce national programs. These networks air national commercials, but also have local "avails." "Avails" are commercial time slots set aside for the local cable company to insert local commercials.

Purchasing the Time

1. Often, doing business with the Sales Manager proves to be more productive than with a sales associate.

2. Remember, Advertising Rates are Negotiable. When quoted "rate card" prices, ask, "What packages do you have available?" Packages are "bulk-bundled" advertising slots. Some are bundled around programming, others are just bundled for price reduction. Package buying will save the advertiser significant dollars.

3. Often, cash up front can save 10% to 15%. Ask, "If I pay cash up front today, could you knock off 15%?" Remember the sooner the payment, the sooner the sales person gets his/her commission.

4. Buying your advertising quarterly will save you money. But, often you must ask for the discounted savings.

5. First and third quarters of the year are less expensive times to advertise; and rates during these times are much more negotiable.

Q: What file formats are available for download?

A: TV spots are available in .mov and .avi formats. These formats should import into almost any computer-based non-linear video editing system. Radio spots are available in .wav format.

Q: What does tagging a spot mean?

A: The television spots that are available have a 4 to 10 second "hole" at the end that is reserved for a local church’s information. The inserted, customized information is called a "tag." For instance, a tag might say, "A message from your friends at First Baptist Church, 4th & Main."

Q: How long may we use the TV spots?

A: Once your church purchases an ad from oneMISSION.tv it belongs to your church.  It is our prayer that it will be used for years to come, as long as it remains effective for your church.

Q: Why are the spots only thirty seconds long?

A: Television commercial "avail slots" are broken into and sold in 30 second segments. Though stations do sell 60 second spot segments (and we provide a few 60-second ads), 30-second ads are by far the best value.

Q: How can I maximize the response from our TV spots?

A: There are three things to keep in mind:

  1. Find your audience. Be sure that the spots are airing on a station and at a time that your intended audience would typically be watching.
  2. Repetition communicates. Be sure that you run them often. This is called "frequency." If you are buying 24 runs for a spot, it is better to run 6 per day for 4 days than to run one a day for 24 days.
  3. Use multiple mediums. While running your television message, duplicate the look and content of that same message in other mediums at the same time. For example, while you are running your television spots, consider doing radio too. At the same time, send your church members out door-to-door to deliver fliers with the same look and message; or do a mass mailing, billboards, posters, etc. Give your audience a "multi-sensory" experience.

Q: Will I or can I have exclusive use of the spots in my community?

A: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer exclusivity on any of our spots at this time. If you would like to find out if a church in your area is using a specific spot that you are interested in, please CONTACT US and we will do our best to provide that information to you in a timely manner.

Q: How do I tag my TV and radio spots?

A: You may purchase commercial tagging services from oneMISSION.tv. To do so, or for more information, please CLICK HERE.

Also, if you are buying air time on your local TV or radio station, or on your local cable system, they will usually offer tagging services at no additional charge or very inexpensively. If they do not offer this service up front, ask for it!

To have your local station tag the TV spots, follow this simple procedure:

  1. Contact your local station or cable system and ask them which file format they are able to work with - .MOV or .AVI.
  2. Purchase and download the appropriate file type from OneMission.tv.
  3. Burn one copy of the file to a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM disc and deliver it to the account executive at the station.
  4. Keep another copy of the file on your computer or disc for archival purposes.

If your local TV station or cable system is unable to tag the spots for you for free or for a reasonable price, consider contacting your state Baptist convention or another local church with professional production facilities. If your church owns professional video or audio editing software, you may also do the tagging yourself. There are many professional video and audio editing software packages available for both Mac and PC.

Just remember, the tag is the last thing your audience will see or hear and it will leave an impression. This impression will reflect, either positively or negatively, on your church. Our recommendation is to have your commercial tagged professionally so that the viewer/listener is left with the best impression possible. It will be worth it!

Q: What if I need my TV spots on videotape instead of a downloadable file?

A: We can provide spots on videotape for an additional charge if it is absolutely necessary. The fee would depend on how many spots you are purchasing. Shipping charges will also apply and will be determined based on shipping method. These prices are only available by contacting us directly with your request.

We strongly encourage you to check with your local TV station or cable company before choosing this option. If they are able to work with the computer files, it will save them time and money. If there are questions about compatibilty of file formats, please direct your account executive to CONTACT US and we will be happy to discuss it with them.

Q: Can oneMISSION.tv tag my spots for me?

A: Yes, oneMISSION.tv now tags TV and radio spots for churches and Associations. To find out more about oneMISSION.tv's commercial tagging services, CLICK HERE.
